The Cell Cycle
Interphase: During interphase, cellular organelles double in number, the DNA replicates, and protein synthesis occurs. The chromosomes are no longer visible and the DNA appears as uncoiled chromatin.
Prophase: The first stage in mitosis, occurring after the conclusion of the G2 portion of interphase. During prophase, the parent cell chromosomes condense and become greater compacted than they were during interphase.
Metaphase: The microtubules of the spindle have attached and the chromosomes have lined up on the metaphase plate.
Anaphase: During anaphase, the sister chromatids are pulled apart and move toward opposite poles of the cell.
Telophase: This is the finale stage of Mitosis. The sister chromatids reach the opposite poles as the began to do during anaphase. The nuclear vesicles in the cell begin to re-form around the group of chromosomes at each end.
The cytoplasm divides and daughter cells form.
